Description

Dedicated as parkland in 1847 by developer H.O. Stone, the site cycled through the names Union Square and Astor Square before honoring William C. Goudy, the attorney who argued the watershed 1877 *Munn v. Illinois* Supreme Court case.

Today, the Near North space serves as an active neighborhood gathering spot anchored by a soft-surface playground updated under the Chicago Plays! program. The grounds operate without structured recreation programming, bordered by ornamental metal fencing and featuring sculptor Walter Arnold's limestone drinking fountain detailed with a frog, fish, and turtle.
