Glessner House

4.7 (244)museum

H.H. Richardson’s fortress-like house museum turns inward to a courtyard, preserving intact Arts and Crafts interiors.

Description

Set in Chicago’s historic Prairie Avenue District, the 1886 limestone residence was commissioned for John J. Glessner and his wife Frances as a deliberate break from Victorian convention, doing away with the ornate street facade expected of the era. Today, guided docent tours trace Richardson’s residential floor plan, taking visitors through preserved 19th-century spaces that still hold their original furnishings.
