Ghost Hunting in Savannah's Squares, Then Sage or Holy Water

A Savannah walking ghost tour where you work the EMF reader and spirit rods yourself, in a group the operator keeps small.

Spirit Xperience runs one public ghost walk a night through Savannah's historic district, and the equipment goes to the guests. The listing names spirit rods, an EMF reader, a spirit box, a laser grid, a flashlight and cat balls, and at each haunted stop the guides set up what the company calls a mini investigation.

The company limits numbers and books a single tour each evening. By its own account that keeps a group from being rushed off for a second booking or lost in a crowd. It also says plainly that it cannot guarantee activity. What it does claim is that every tour it has run to date has had what it calls very interesting interactions.

Use of the investigation equipment is part of the booking. Tickets come in two age bands, adults from 13 and children from 5 to 12 at a lower rate, and every booking needs an adult. The operator's own page adds that gratuity is appreciated.

Cancel at least 24 hours before the 7:30 PM start for a full refund; inside that window there is no refund. The listing asks for an umbrella or poncho when rain is forecast, and offers another date or a full refund when poor weather cancels a tour.

The Night You Book Picks the Route

Wednesdays and Fridays start and finish in Wright Square. The operator's list for that route runs through Alice Riley, the Gordons, the spirits it places in Colonial Park Cemetery, Anna Powell, Mr. Peter and Mr. Bradley. The booking page calls Wright Square Savannah's Hanging Square and ties it to Alice Riley.

Thursdays and Saturdays start and finish in Monterey Square. That route's list covers the Mercer Williams House, Forsyth Park, the Old Candler Hospital, the Hanging Tree, the former Wesley Monumental parsonage, Taylor Square and a building the company calls the Demon House. At the Mercer Williams House, the listing promises the story of what became of Jim Williams after Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Taylor Square is the former Calhoun Square, which the city council renamed in August 2023 for Susie King Taylor.

The booking page folds both routes into one list of stops, while the operator's own pages split them by night. Pick the night for the stories you came for.

Rods, Readers and a Blessing at the End

The kit reads like a ghost hunter's checklist: spirit rods, an EMF reader, a spirit box, a laser grid, a flashlight and cat balls. Guests use them at the stops while the guides tell the history and folklore of each place, and the company frames the stops as attempts to communicate with Savannah's spirits.

Each session opens and closes with what the operator describes as a step for the respect and protection of guests and spirits alike. At the end the guides offer a cleansing or blessing, with white sage or holy water, whichever the guest prefers.

The owner and guide, Mike DeFore, is a former reverend who attended Emory University's Candler School of Theology. The company says his wife, Ty, joins its tours as a special guest and presents her as a clairvoyant, and it says both have more than five years of experience running ghost tours in downtown Savannah.

Half a Mile, Spread Over a Long Evening

The walking is short. The operator puts each route at about half a mile, with multiple stops at haunted locations, and calls the walk not strenuous. Plan on about two and a half hours, the figure the operator gives on its own site and in the listing's description, even though the listing's duration field says two.

The listing's own note says the tour is not recommended for travelers who cannot walk or stand for more than two hours. The same note adds that the route stays on open sidewalks and streets, where walkers, wheelchairs, strollers and other assistive devices can be used. The operator asks guests to wear comfortable shoes and bring a drink to stay hydrated.

Which Square to Walk To

📍 On Wednesdays and Fridays, meet in Wright Square, on Bull Street between West State and West York Streets. On Thursdays and Saturdays, meet in Monterey Square, on Bull Street between Taylor and Gordon Streets. Both walks start at 7:30 PM and finish back in the square where they began. The listing's own direction is to type the square's name into any maps app.

As of October 13, 2026, the booking calendar showed one 7:30 PM departure on each of those four nights and none from Sunday through Tuesday.

Bring comfortable shoes, something to drink and, when rain is in the forecast, an umbrella or poncho. Everything for the investigation is handed out on the night.

The evening ends where it began, back in the square, with the choice of white sage or holy water before the walk home.
