An allegorical Civil War memorial where sculpted virtues strip away the Union general's symbolic cloak of battle.
Description

Sculptor Charles Grafly designed the memorial with architects Grant and Edward P. Simon, carved by the Piccirilli Brothers. Behind the central circle of virtues rises a winged figure representing War, linking arms with Military Courage beneath a gold finial bearing Pennsylvania’s state seal.
Dedicated in 1927 on the National Mall, the monument was removed in 1969 for freeway construction. It spent 14 years in storage before its 1984 reinstallation on Pennsylvania Avenue, remaining one of Washington’s 18 Civil War monuments.
