Gentle Ballet Mornings Inside the Ebell of Los Angeles
A slow, chair-supported ballet class at the Ebell of Los Angeles, built for beginners and anyone easing back into movement.
🩰 Monday morning at the Ebell

🩰 What the class actually is
The Gentle Ballet Series runs at a deliberately slow tempo. Dancers hold the back of a chair instead of a fixed barre, which keeps weight off the knees and lets anyone set the depth of a plié themselves. The sequences stay short. Tendus, port de bras, and a few balance holds each get broken down before the music starts. Nobody goes up on pointe, and there is no mirrored wall to check yourself against.
🏛 The room you will be dancing in
The Ebell opened at 4401 West 8th Street in 1924 and still keeps its Italianate courtyard and the 1,270-seat Wilshire Ebell Theatre next door. Classes run in the club's interior rooms, where the ceilings are high enough that a raised arm never feels cramped. Mid-Wilshire sits between Koreatown and Hancock Park, so the block stays quiet on a Monday morning.
📋 How to plan the morning
The session starts at 10:00 AM and runs about an hour. Soft-soled shoes or thick socks grip the floor better than sneakers. Street parking along 8th Street fills up after 9:30, and the lot entrance is on Lucerne Boulevard. Bring a water bottle. There is no cafe on the campus.
