Galveston's Broadway Mansions and the House Where Robert Durst Hid

A 90-minute guided walk past Ashton Villa, the Sealy Mansion and Moody Mansion, with a stop where Robert Durst lived as Dorothy.

Galveston Tour Co. builds this walk around three houses on Broadway and one address with a darker story. Its own tour page names Moody Mansion, the Sealy Mansion and Ashton Villa as the highlights and puts the route at about a mile of easy walking, with frequent stops along the way.

The walk does not go inside any of the houses. The listing repeats it, and reviewers who missed that line mentioned it afterward. What the 90 minutes buys is the outside of each house, the families behind it, and a guide with time to tell the story from the fence line.

The meeting point is the life-size statue of Henry Rosenberg at the Rosenberg Library's 23rd Street entrance, 2310 Sealy Avenue. Rosenberg was the Galveston businessman whose will paid for the library, and the statue is the work of Louis Amateis, who also sculpted the city's Texas Heroes Monument. The operator asks guests to arrive 15 minutes early, and the walk finishes back at the statue.

As of October 14, 2026, the booking calendar lists departures at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, though not every slot runs every day. Booking closes two hours before the start, and confirmation is instant. Each departure takes up to 20 travelers. Child tickets cover ages 1 to 13 at half the adult fare, and every booking needs at least one adult.

Where Broadway's Mansion Row Began

The walk opens at the library itself, which the listing calls the oldest continuously running free public library in Texas and gives the first 15 minutes. A September 2025 reviewer noted the group started indoors there, out of the heat.

On Broadway, Ashton Villa is the earliest of the three houses. James Moreau Brown, a hardware merchant, built it in 1859, and the listing bills it as the first mansion on Broadway and the first brick home in Texas. The listing promises the story of a colorful lady who lived there without naming her; the resident the house is known for is Bettie Brown, the builder's daughter, who never married. The Sealy family's house follows, which the company lists for the family's influence and the legend behind its name, Open Gates.

Expect families and fortunes more than ghosts. Two reviewers who came expecting a ghost walk said it ran more historic than spooky, while others singled out the architecture.

See Moody Mansion From the Fence, Then From Inside

Moody Mansion runs to four stories and 28,000 square feet. It was completed in 1895, and the operator's tour page points to its Romanesque Revival design. It is also the one house on this route that you can enter on your own.

Moody Mansion runs its own house-museum tours seven days a week from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with last tickets sold at 4:00 PM. It closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, tickets are sold on site, and that visit is separate from this walk. Book the 9:00 AM departure and the museum is already open when the walk ends.

The Woman Called Dorothy Was Robert Durst

The listing saves one stop for what it calls the darkest place on the island: the house where a man lived disguised, in its words, as a deaf mute woman named Dorothy. That man was Robert Durst, the New York real-estate heir. He signed the lease on an Avenue K apartment in November 2000 dressed as a woman and calling himself Dorothy Ciner.

His neighbor, Morris Black, was 71. Black's dismembered remains turned up in Galveston Bay in the fall of 2001. Durst testified that Black died in a struggle over a gun, and a Galveston jury acquitted him of murder in November 2003; he later pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and to bail jumping. The operator's page calls him a serial killer; the court record is narrower. A Los Angeles jury convicted him of a separate murder in 2021, and that conviction was vacated after he died in custody in January 2022 with his appeal still open.

In Summer, Take the 9:00 AM Walk

Heat is the complaint that turns up most in the reviews. An August 2026 walker called it a hot walk, a September 2025 reviewer advised carrying water for anything at 1:00 PM or later, and a two-star July 2025 review said it was just too hot. In warm months the 9:00 AM departure is the cooler choice. The operator suggests comfortable shoes, sunglasses, a hat and a bottle of water.

The listing marks the route wheelchair and stroller accessible and suitable for all physical fitness levels, and it advises against the walk for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. The operator's own pages describe it only as easy walking, and one reviewer mentioned some uneven surfaces. A January 2026 reviewer finished it alongside an 83-year-old grandmother. Gratuity is not included.
