Three New York Discoveries
At Street Level in 56 Leonard
The gallery sits at street level in 56 Leonard, the Herzog and de Meuron tower on Church Street, and the glass front is the point. The space was conceived as a civic gesture, pulling art and architecture out of private rooms and into the sidewalk view. Collectible design shares the floor with collaborations built around structural lighting. Doors open Monday through Friday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and stay shut all weekend. An Anish Kapoor sculpture marks the corner outside.
Skewers That Turn Themselves
Auto-rotating table grills do the turning at Ganblaze, with a time guide and individual timers tracking each skewer. The grills run every day from 12:00 PM to 3:00 AM. Bigger pieces like wings or fish knock into neighboring skewers as they spin. A gacha machine dispenses prizes and jams often enough to pull staff off the floor. Meats arrive fresh with a spread of sides and sauces, priced mid-range.
House-Made Vegan on Grand Street
Garden Carver keeps a tiny garden-themed room on Grand Street where everything vegan is made in house. The display case holds daily pastries beside vegan meats and cheeses, with grab-and-go items for anyone not staying. A chewy seitan chicken parm hero carries real sauce, and smash burgers hold the heavier end. Monday through Thursday opens at 10:00 AM, Friday through Sunday at 9:00 AM. Skip the veggie chips.
