Two 18th-century buildings preserve the tavern and ballroom where George Washington and Thomas Jefferson once gathered.
Description

Englishman John Gadsby operated the properties from 1796 to 1808, anchoring a business central to Alexandria’s port economy that offered spaces to dine, entertain, and spend the night. While patrons included Martha Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette, the tavern's renowned hospitality was made possible by a large enslaved labor force.
