Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve
4.8 (275)park
Daily one hour after sunrise to one hour after sunset
Wooded trails follow Salt Creek through prime birding grounds, anchored by Illinois’s only working waterwheel gristmill.
Description

Across 220 urban acres, the preserve balances wildlife habitat with regional history. Spring and fall migrations draw birders specifically for migratory warblers, alongside resident nesting songbirds. The Nature Education Center features hands-on exhibits and native wildlife on display, while local architectural history appears nearby at the Ben Fuller House, built from small timber as one of the oldest balloon-frame structures in Illinois. Trails also support bicycling, horseback riding, and winter snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, alongside fishing and boating on Salt Creek.
