Fuller (Melville) Park
4.6 (103)park
A historic South Side park anchored by an Edward H. Bennett fieldhouse, Olmsted-designed grounds, and an outdoor pool.
Description

Opened in 1911 as part of the South Park Commission's pioneering neighborhood park system, the grounds were adapted by the Olmsted Brothers, who hid unsightly raised train tracks behind an athletic grandstand. Architect Edward H. Bennett refined his civic fieldhouse concept into a symmetrical complex flanking a central outdoor children's courtyard, centered on an assembly hall housing murals of Spanish and French explorers by John Warner Norton. Beyond its gymnasiums and fitness rooms, the recreation space spans baseball and tennis facilities, an interactive water spray area, and a refurbished patio and fountain plaza frequently reserved for community celebrations.
