From Still to Barrel to Bottle at Stranahan's in Denver

A guided hour through the working distillery, with four whiskey samples and ten dollars off a select bottle at the end.

Follow the whiskey from still to bottle at Stranahan's.

Stranahan's makes American single malt whiskey at its distillery on South Kalamath Street in Denver, and this hour takes you through the building where that happens. The company dates itself to 2004 and calls itself Colorado's first legal whiskey distillery since Prohibition.

The hour opens in the Visitor Center with a short introduction and a welcome pour. A guide then leads the group through the distillery, following the whiskey from distillation to barrel aging to bottling. The walk ends back in the Visitor Center, and that is where the ten dollars off a select bottle can be used.

Four whiskey samples come with the ticket. In a September 2025 post, Stranahan's described them as a guided tasting that closes the tour: Blue Peak, Original, Diamond Peak and a rotating Distillery Exclusive. Neither the listing nor that post says whether the welcome pour counts as one of the four. One guest's July 2026 review advises eating before you come.

Check In Through the Visitor Center Doors

The listing says to follow the directional signs, enter through the Visitor Center doors and check in at the front desk. Stranahan's own directions add detail: use the main double doors on the southwest side and arrive five minutes early to check in at the tour desk. Every tour starts in the General Store. Parking is free on site.

Every guest has to be 21 or older with valid ID, and Stranahan's requires closed-toe shoes, so no sandals or flip-flops. The ticket works on a phone or on paper, one ticket covers the whole booking, and a single booking holds up to ten people; the tour itself can take up to 30 guests, by Stranahan's own count. Dress for the building, too: the company says the distillery can be chilly in winter and the rackhouse heats up in summer.

Four Ingredients and a Barn Fire

The company tells its origin story this way. In 1998 a volunteer firefighter named Jess Graber answered a neighbor's barn fire. The barn belonged to George Stranahan, a Woody Creek local, long-time brewery owner and whiskey connoisseur, and the two went on to develop a single malt recipe together. Stranahan's gives 2004 as its founding year and 2006 as the year its first Original bottle came out.

The recipe, as Stranahan's tells it, has four ingredients: malted barley, yeast, Rocky Mountain water and time in the barrel. The tour follows that list through the building, from the stills to the barrels to the bottling.

After the walk, the cocktail lounge at the same address keeps drams of the latest Distillery Exclusives, Diamond Peak and Snowflake on hand to sip, according to the company.

Read the Calendar Before You Pick a Day

Checked on 10 October 2026, this listing offered tour times on the hour between noon and 7:00 PM in a set weekly pattern. Fridays and Saturdays carried the most. Sundays offered noon, 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM; a guest review from July 2026 describes a Sunday visit with the bottling section very quiet. Tuesdays and Wednesdays offered 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, and Mondays a single 5:00 PM start. Thursdays showed no open start at all, every week through early January. Stranahan's own contact page describes tours as offered daily; the times above are the ones this listing sells.

Stranahan's posted holiday hours list New Year's Day as closed, while this listing still showed starts on 1 January 2027. Plan around the posted closure.

Early December brings the distillery's Snowflake bottle release, with camping from Thursday 3 December and the release on Saturday 5 December 2026. Stranahan's event page says on-site parking will not be available during the event. The same check found Friday 4 December starts open on this listing and none on the Saturday; on the Friday, plan on a rideshare or public transit, as Stranahan's suggests.

Who the Hour Suits, and the Fine Print

The listing rates this tour suitable for all physical fitness levels and ticks three access boxes: wheelchair accessible, all areas and surfaces wheelchair accessible, and transportation options wheelchair accessible. It also says the tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers, and service animals are allowed.

Stranahan's says two things about access in writing. Its FAQ for the Snowflake release event says the distillery is ADA accessible and asks guests with specific accessibility needs to email info@stranahans.com ahead of time. Its tour waiver has every guest confirm they are not limited by any physical or mental condition, disability or illness that could increase the risk of harm, and have no medical condition, pregnancy included, that may impact participation.

The same waiver bans smoking and vaping anywhere on the property, with a USD 250 charge for each violation, and lets staff turn away anyone who arrives intoxicated, without a refund.

Cancel at least 24 hours before the start for a full refund; inside 24 hours, nothing is refunded.

The General Store and the cocktail lounge share the distillery's address. The lounge is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and opens at 3:00 PM on Mondays and Thursdays; on Fridays and Saturdays it pours from noon until 9:00 PM. A late Saturday afternoon tour ends with the bar already open.
