From South Lido's Sand Into the Mangrove Tunnels and Back

A guided paddle into the mangrove tunnels off Lido Key, where the canopy closes overhead and the water stays flat.

Book a kayak or paddleboard through South Lido's tunnels.

The mangrove tunnels sit at the south end of Lido Key, where the channels narrow and the branches knit shut overhead. Light comes through green and broken. SURFit USA runs the route on a fixed two-hour clock, and the crew adjusts the line and the equipment when conditions call for it.

The canopy is what makes this a workable midday booking in Florida. Out on the open bay the sun has nowhere to go.

You pick the craft at booking. Single kayak, tandem kayak, or stand-up paddleboard, with the paddle and life jacket included whichever you choose. A shared departure carries as many as 38 people.

Mangrove Tunnel & Manatee Kayak Eco-TourTwo guided hours through the Lido Key mangrove tunnels, launching off the beach at South Lido. Paddles, life jackets, and the craft are included. From USD 59 per person.www.viator.com

What You Actually See Down There

The guides narrate the mangrove system while you move through it, and they keep the talk plain enough for kids. The standing list is shorebirds, fish, crabs, and rays.

Manatees and dolphins move through the bay in some seasons and not others, and no guide controls that. The tunnels are what you booked. The manatees are the day you got lucky.

Picking a Hull, and Who Ends Up in a Tandem

Three options at checkout: a single kayak, a tandem kayak, or a stand-up paddleboard. You choose at booking, and that choice shapes the next two hours more than anything else on the trip.

Kids under 10 belong in a tandem with an adult, and a child under five rides along with two adults at no charge. Infants ride on an adult's lap. Service animals are allowed.

The operator rates the route for all fitness levels. The water inside the tunnels is calm.

Your Booking Time Is the Launch Time

The time on the booking is the moment the group pushes off the beach. Check-in, gear fitting, and the safety briefing all happen before that, and the operator asks for 15 minutes to do them. Arrive at your booking time and the tour has already started.

SURFit parks directly across from the bathroom building at the park. Check in under that name.

Parking is on site. Weekends, holidays, and spring break fill it. Leave more room in the schedule on those days.

What to Bring, and What Is Already in the Boat

In the price:

  • the kayak or paddleboard you chose at booking
  • paddle
  • life jacket and leash
  • government fees
  • a small dry bag for a phone and keys

Not in it:

  • water. The operator provides none and asks for at least 16 oz per person, more in summer.
  • snacks
  • gratuities, optional, taken in cash or Venmo at the end

Wear clothes and shoes you are willing to get wet. Water shoes or flip flops are enough. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses with a strap. Towels and a change of clothes stay in the car.

Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the departure time. Inside 24 hours there is no refund. The operator cancels for bad weather or for too few travelers, and those cancellations are refunded. Routes and equipment can change for conditions and safety.

📍 The launch is the beach at Ted Sperling Park, 190 Taft Dr on Lido Key, and the trip ends back where it started.

Two hours later you come back out of the canopy onto the same stretch of sand, blinking at the open sky.
