From Slip D 108 Out Past Diamond Head at Sunset

Two hours out of Kewalo Harbor on a 55-foot catamaran, leaving at five and back by seven. The first drink from the premium bar is included, the boat sails out past the point of Diamond Head, and from November to May there are humpbacks in the same water.

Catch the Diamond Head sunset aboard the Moana.

The Moana ties up at the back of Kewalo Harbor, slip D 108, across from Kewalo Park. One trip goes out each evening. Boarding opens at 4:45 p.m., the gate shuts at 4:55, and the boat leaves at five.

Both the booking page and the company's own schedule say the same thing about that gate: arrive after 4:55 and there is no refund. The two sites then disagree about how early to turn up. The booking page says thirty minutes before check-in. Moana's own site says thirty minutes before departure. Take the earlier one and you are covered either way.

What you get for the next two hours is actual sailing, along the Waikiki shoreline and out past the point of Diamond Head, with the bar open the whole way.

The ticket covers the sail and your first drink. Restrooms are on board. Hotel pickup is not included, and neither are gratuities.

The booking page adds one rule the operator's own pages never mention: this is a barefoot sail, and shoes are collected before you board. Plan your footwear around losing it at the gate.

Book earlier in the day than you think you need to. Same-day reservations close at 2:00 p.m.

What the Boat Does With Those Two Hours

The course runs along the Waikiki shoreline and out past the point of Diamond Head before turning back. Neither one is a stop. The boat passes them, which is the point, because the thing worth watching is behind you: the sun going down over open water while the skyline picks up the colour.

From November to May the operator adds humpback whales to the same ticket at no extra cost. Nothing is promised. Moana's own page says sea life cannot be guaranteed on every trip. Dolphins and sea turtles work the same stretch of water.

On a clear evening the last thing to watch for is the green flash, which the operator mentions once and does not oversell.

The First Round Is Included, the Rest Goes on a Tab

Your first drink is on the house. After that the operator's own price list puts alcohol at USD 8 and non-alcoholic drinks at USD 4, which covers soda, juice and bottled water. The booking page quotes the same USD 8 for every round after the first.

The bar leans local. Kōloa rum comes from Kauai, and there is Hawaiian volcanic water on the list for anyone skipping the alcohol.

The booking page files alcohol and carbonated drinks under exclusions. That is the same arrangement described from the other end: one round is covered, everything after it is yours.

How Full the Deck Gets

The two sources disagree here too, and the gap is one passenger wide. The booking page caps this sail at 47. Moana's own site puts the Coast Guard certificate for the boat at 48. Either way you are on a shared deck with a few dozen strangers, so claim a place on the bow netting early.

One option on the booking page is a different vessel altogether: the semi-private Nalu is a power catamaran that carries up to six, so check which boat your option puts you on.

A single booking holds up to 30 travellers. That number limits your reservation. It says nothing about how many people are on the boat. Children book from birth to twelve and adults from thirteen, and an adult has to be on the reservation.

The Refund Clock Runs Differently on Each Site

The booking page gives a full refund with at least 24 hours' notice. The operator's own policy asks for 48. Cancel by the 48-hour mark and you satisfy both, which is the only deadline worth writing down.

Changing your date is gentler than cancelling it. Moana allows a free reschedule up to 24 hours before departure.

If the operator calls the trip off for weather or maintenance, the refund is full and comes from their side. The booking terms also allow a departure to be cancelled when too few people have booked.

The harbour entrance is at 1125 Ala Moana Boulevard and the slip sits at the south end, past the park. Parking inside the harbour is paid and limited, and both the operator and the booking page tell you plainly to take a rideshare or a cab instead. The Ward blocks across the road hold the overflow.

Come down the dock with twenty minutes in hand, hand over your shoes, and take a spot on the netting up front. The sun does the rest.
