From San Juan Capistrano to a Cave Under Oak Mountain

A full day in Temecula Valley with someone else driving, and a per-person rate that drops as the group grows.

Plan a Temecula wine day from San Juan Capistrano.

The van pulls away from Verdugo Street at 9:00 AM and heads inland to Temecula Valley. Eight and a half hours later it comes back to the same curb, which is the part that matters on a day built around tasting rooms.

Four travelers is the floor. The booking form will not take three. That one rule shapes the rest of the trip, including what each seat costs.

A guide drives the whole route and narrates it. Bottled water, snacks, and air conditioning are in the van.

The route holds four winery stops and one town. Three of the wineries pour tastings the price already covers. The fourth is the lunch stop, and lunch is the one thing you buy yourself.

Forty Minutes in Old Town Before Any Wine

The route starts in town. The van parks in Old Town Temecula and the group gets forty minutes of unstructured time on a main street the listing describes as Western-era, lined with boutiques and coffee counters.

On Saturdays a farmers market runs here, though the listing attaches a when-available note to it. Anyone choosing a date around that market has one reason to pick Saturday. Saturday also changes where the group eats lunch, which is covered below.

Forty minutes covers a coffee and a walk to the end of the block. It does not cover a sit-down meal, and lunch is still two stops away.

A Cave Cut Into the Hill at Oak Mountain

Somerset Vineyard and Winery comes first: an hour that includes a tasting and a walk through production. The guided part is the point, because somebody explains what the equipment does while you are standing next to it.

Oak Mountain follows, and it is the stop people remember. The winery bills its cave as the largest in Southern California. It is cut into the hillside, strung with lights, and lined with barrels, and the hour there covers a tasting, a guided cave tour, and charcuterie boards.

Tastings at the wineries are included. Lunch and gratuities are not. The listing's own summary line says the opposite and calls tastings excluded. The operator's tour page files tastings at three to four wineries under inclusions, and the itinerary repeats it stop by stop.

Lunch Lands at a Different Winery Depending on the Day

The lunch winery changes with the day of the week. Monday through Friday the group stops at Cougar Winery, where Sangio's Deli on site handles the food. On Saturdays it is Bel Vino, which runs a bistro, picnic tables, and live music.

Lunch is not in the price at either one. Budget for it the way you would budget for any restaurant meal, and add gratuities on top.

Callaway closes the day from a hilltop with a view across the valley, and the last tasting happens there. After that the van turns back toward the coast.

What the Seat Actually Costs

This is a private tour, which means one booking takes the whole van and the size of the party sets the rate. Per person, four travelers pay USD 317.65 and fourteen pay USD 173.11. The van, the route, and the guide are identical at both ends of that range.

The ladder steps at every number in between: a group of six pays less per head than a group of five. The booking page shows the current rate for the party size you enter, and that is the number you pay.

Departures run Monday through Saturday at 9:00 AM. There are no Sunday departures. The listing says infants can ride in a pram or stroller and that specialized infant seats are available, and at least one adult has to be on the booking.

The meeting point is 26701 Verdugo Street in San Juan Capistrano. Public parking sits nearby, including the Franciscan Plaza structure, and the listing warns that fees may apply and spaces fill early. Travelers staying in a short-term rental or private home near downtown San Juan Capistrano can be collected from the door instead.

Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund. The listing also notes that the tour suits all fitness levels but is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. Service animals are allowed.

The van is back on Verdugo Street about eight and a half hours after it left, and the operator notes traffic can stretch that. Either way the evening stays loose, a few steps from where you parked that morning.
