From Congo Square to the Live Set Your Guide Picks

A 2.5-hour jazz history walk from Congo Square through Tremé and the French Quarter, ending with live music and a drink.

This walk comes in two halves, and the order matters. The small-group departure starts at 5:00 PM under the arched entrance of Louis Armstrong Park, where the guide spends the first stretch on how jazz grew out of New Orleans, then crosses into the French Quarter and finishes inside live music venues, with one drink included at one of the stops.

The music stop is not fixed. The listing says your guide picks it each night, going where the strongest performances are happening. Two people who book the same tour on different nights can end up in different rooms.

The booking covers the guided walk and one drink, alcoholic or non-alcoholic, at one of the music stops. Additional drinks, food and tips for the guide and the musicians are paid on the night.

Everyone on the tour has to be 21 or older, and the listing asks you to bring a government-issued photo ID. The operator caps shared departures at 12 travelers.

History Comes First, in Armstrong Park and Congo Square

The listing gives Louis Armstrong Park about 35 minutes and Congo Square another 15. The operator describes the talk as the origins of jazz, Armstrong himself, and Congo Square as one of the first places in the city where enslaved people and free people of color were allowed to gather, with West African and Caribbean sounds meeting European influences.

Anyone booking mainly to hear bands should know the live music sits in the second half. Some reviews from 2019 through early 2025 complain of a long stretch in the park before any club. Recent travelers more often praise the history talk, then describe the music stops that followed.

Your Guide Chooses the Clubs on the Night

The route is the guide's call. The operator says it may run along Bourbon Street and past Preservation Hall, catch a busker at the French Market, or head to Frenchmen Street, and it reserves the right to change the route and the places visited.

Reviews posted since late 2025 that count the music stops almost all describe two clubs, with the included drink at one of them. Travelers name rooms on both Bourbon Street and Frenchmen Street. With up to 12 people arriving together, seats are not a given. One traveler in March 2026 wrote that the group had to sit in the back room of a crowded second club.

About 1.5 Miles, and Who Should Ask First

The walk covers about 14 blocks, roughly 1.5 miles, through Tremé, Congo Square and the French Quarter. One traveler in March 2026 called the pace easy-going, with two chances to stop and rest. Others simply note a lot of walking.

The listing ticks the wheelchair-accessible boxes, but the operator's own tour page says nothing about access, and the music stops change nightly. Anyone using a wheelchair or with limited mobility should ask the operator about that night's route and venues before booking. Solo travelers can join the shared tour. The private version needs at least two people, and the operator charges a solo booking at the two-person rate.

Holidays, Weather and the 24-Hour Cutoff

The small-group tour starts at 5:00 PM on most days of the year. The booking calendar has no departures on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day or July 4, and none from February 5 through 9, 2027, a stretch that ends on Mardi Gras.

Bookings close 24 hours before the start, which is also the cutoff for a full refund. The listing allows the operator to cancel for bad weather, and says it will try to replace any closed site with a similar one.

📍 Meet under the arched entrance of Louis Armstrong Park, 701 N. Rampart St., in Tremé. The map pin marks the park itself.

The tour does not return there. It finishes at a central spot around the French Quarter, and the guide passes on recommendations for the rest of the night. More than one recent traveler simply stayed on at the last club.
