From a Potter's Field to Mark Twain's Old Address

Greenwich Village after dark with a guide who goes by The Professor, across ground the city once used as a burial field.

Walk from a potter's field to Mark Twain's old address.

Washington Square Park reads like a campus quad after dinner. Skateboards in the fountain basin, a chess game going under the lamps, students cutting through the arch on their way home.

In 1797 the city's Common Council bought this land for a potter's field and for public executions, and that is where the legend of the Hangman's Elm in the northwest corner comes from. The account is the Parks Department's own, posted on a sign inside the park. Haunted Manhattan opens its Greenwich Village walk on the same idea and asks it out loud: popular tourist destination, hang-out for college students, and burial ground?

The walk leaves at 7:30 PM every night of the week, and booking on this listing closes at 2:00 PM the same afternoon.

The guide works in character. Haunted Manhattan's own guide page introduces The Professor as a long-time Village resident, an Edgar Allan Poe aficionado who claims to have spoken with Poe in the park on several occasions, and an academic advisor to students plagued by ghosts in their dorm rooms. The listing bills them as a "noted professor of anthropology & the supernatural," quotation marks included. Narration is in English.

Thirteen haunted locations, by the listing's count. The operator's own page gives away three of them: a matinee at the Provincetown Playhouse, poetry from Poe, a carriage ride with Aaron Burr. The rest stay off the page so the surprises survive the walk.

How Far You Walk, and Where It Starts

Haunted Manhattan puts its Greenwich Village tour at about 1.75 miles and roughly ninety minutes, depending on traffic and the size of the group. The listing books it as 100 minutes. Plan around the longer figure: a 7:30 PM departure plus 100 minutes puts you back in the park a little after 9:00 PM.

📍 The group forms outside the park's southwest corner, at MacDougal Street and Washington Square West, and finishes inside the park in front of the Washington Memorial Arch at Fifth Avenue. The operator sends the exact meeting details by email on the afternoon of the tour, so that inbox matters more than the map.

The listing marks the route wheelchair accessible across all areas and surfaces, suitable for all physical fitness levels, and workable with a pram or stroller. It also says the tour is not recommended for travelers with issues walking for over 90 minutes.

Dress for It, and Leave the Dog at Home

Haunted Manhattan runs its tours rain or shine, hot or cold, and asks for comfortable clothing and sneakers. The listing files bad weather, along with too few travelers, as a reason a departure can be called off. The operator's posture is the one you will feel on the night; the listing's clause is the one that can cancel the departure.

Pets stay home. The operator asks guests to leave animals behind for the safety of guests and guides, and points pet-minded bookers toward the ex-President's dog that tags along through the park on this particular walk. The listing separately marks service animals as allowed.

The listing notes public transportation options nearby, and marks those options wheelchair accessible.

Who the Night Is For

Children can be on the booking from age six, and the listing prices them at USD 30 against USD 35 for an adult. At least one adult has to be on the reservation.

The operator's own answer on children is yes with a caveat in the same breath: these are tales of hauntings, horror and the macabre, and it tells families to use their own judgement. It also names a different one of its four walks, the West Village tour, as the most family-friendly. Read that as a steer away from this one if the group skews young.

One booking takes up to thirteen travelers. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, per the listing.

Price, Ticket, and the Cancellation Line

The price is per person, and the listing's starting figure is the solo adult rate:

  • Adult, seventeen and up: USD 35
  • Child, six to sixteen: USD 30

Confirmation is instant and the ticket is mobile, with paper accepted. One ticket covers the whole booking. Cancel at least twenty-four hours before the start time for a full refund; inside twenty-four hours the listing refunds nothing.

Booking on this listing closes at 2:00 PM on the day of the departure. There is one departure a night, seven nights a week, and individual dates already show as sold out on the schedule.

The pin on this page sits on Washington Square Park. The group forms just outside it, on the southwest corner where MacDougal Street meets Washington Square West, and ends under the arch at the top of the park.

Come out a little after nine with the chess tables still going and the fountain still lit, and the square reads differently than it did an hour and a half earlier.
