From a Cannery Row Beach Out to the Otters' Kelp
A sea kayak, a wildlife briefing and two hours to look for sea otters, seals and sea lions in the kelp off Cannery Row.
Adventures by the Sea rents sea kayaks from its flagship shop at 299 Cannery Row in Monterey. You check in, sit through a safety and wildlife talk, then launch from the beach across the street into the kelp of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

The booking below is the two-hour rental, with start times on the hour from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The listing names a paddle, a life vest and a dry bag for phones and cameras as included.
Monterey Bay Kayak Rental Two Hours: Otters, Seals and Sea LionsTwo-hour sea kayak rental from Adventures by the Sea on Cannery Row, Monterey, with paddle, life vest and dry bag.www.viator.comThe Shop Points the Way, Then the Route Is Yours

Staff run a safety and wildlife orientation at check-in and suggest a route for seeing animals. Renters describe being shown how to handle the kayak and told where wildlife tends to gather before they push off. After that the bay is yours. No guide paddles with you, and a guided outing is a separate booking. One renter in July 2025 put it this way: "Not really a 'tour' as much as it is touring around on your own."
Plan on two hours. The listing's description also says kayak rentals have no time limit, but this booking is sold as a two-hour rental, and the shop's own booking system sells kayak time in fixed blocks. Several renters found two hours enough, including one who wrote that she was almost 80 and could easily spend the 2 hours on the water. One visitor in 2024 wished for three.
Five Kayak Lengths From the Otters

Renters on this rental report sea otters asleep in the kelp, harbor seals and plenty of sea lions, and one counted ten otters in a single outing. Another sketched the layout: otters about 50 yards from the launch, the aquarium at one end of the paddle and sea lions toward the marina at the other. None of it runs on a schedule.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service asks kayakers to keep at least 60 feet, about five kayak lengths, from sea otters, pass them parallel rather than pointing straight at them, and keep moving slowly instead of stopping. If an otter notices you, the agency says, you are likely too close and should back away. It also asks paddlers to slow down around kelp, where otters often rest and are hard to see. Federal law protects otters, seals and sea lions from harassment. One renter's advice follows from that distance: "you need a good zoom lens and a steady hand to photograph them from five kayak lengths away."
Splash Gear On, Valuables Ashore
The shop's booking notes list life vests, paddles, splash gear in the form of jackets and pants, dry bags and the safety and wildlife orientation as included. The dry bags are 10-liter, and the same notes say they come in limited numbers. The shop has changing rooms. Its FAQ suggests shorts or workout pants with a T-shirt underneath, and it recommends a single layer under the splash gear and calls barefoot perfect.
Cubbies take layers and anything you would not mind leaving. Valuables stay in the car or behind the counter with staff. Bring a towel, a hat or sunglasses, sunscreen and a water bottle, which you can refill free at the shop's dispenser.
Ages, Access and the Early Start Times
The listing sells youth places from age 5. The shop's FAQ adds the condition that shapes the booking: riders aged 5 to 13 paddle a tandem kayak with an adult, and a single kayak starts at age 14. One family on this listing took an 8-year-old out for the two hours.
The listing marks the rental "Wheelchair accessible" and says "All areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible." The shop's FAQ names a different location, its Breakwater Cove shop, as the one that is accessible for kayaking, and that shop launches from a floating boat ramp. This booking launches from the beach across from 299 Cannery Row, and one renter describes going down a set of stairs to reach it. The booking form has a special-requirements field for access needs.
Timing advice from renters runs one way. One wrote "Go early for best conditions- no wind!" and another said earlier slots make for easier entry because of the tides. The first start is 9:00 AM.
📍 Check in at Adventures by the Sea, 299 Cannery Row, Monterey, then cross the street and launch from the sand. Every adult signs a waiver, online beforehand or on a printed form brought to the shop, and anyone under 18 is listed under an adult.
For parking, the shop points renters to the city lot at San Carlos Beach Park. The city's posted rate there is two dollars an hour with a fourteen-dollar daily cap, enforced 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily, paid at the pay station or through the ParkMobile app.
Cancel at least 24 hours before your start time for a full refund. Later cancellations are not refunded. Pick a slot, ideally an early one, and let the kelp line off Cannery Row decide your route.
