From a Black Canyon Overlook to Emerald Cave's Green Water
A guided paddle upstream from Willow Beach, with a stop for canyon history and snacks before Emerald Cave.
Colorado River Kayak Tours runs this half-day paddle out of Willow Beach, on the Arizona side of the Colorado inside Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The company describes itself as a one-man operation for now, and it says park guidelines cap each trip at twelve guests.
You drive yourself to the beach, pick a single or a tandem kayak, and paddle a four-mile round trip upstream through Black Canyon. Every kayak carries a rudder, which the listing says makes paddling easier.

The booking covers the kayak, paddle and a Coast Guard-approved life jacket, the guide, and snacks with bottled water. It does not cover the park entrance fee, tips, or any ride from Las Vegas.
Bring water shoes or sandals with backs, a hat and sunscreen. The operator lists dry bags as not provided and highly recommended.

After the gear fitting, the guide gives a safety briefing and some paddling tips on the beach, then leads the group upstream into Black Canyon. Partway up, the trip stops at a historic scenic overlook, where the operator says the guide covers the river, early river travel and the building of Hoover Dam. Snacks and water come out there before the last stretch to Emerald Cave.
One July 2026 guest described the stop this way: "We even took a small hike along the canyon to see the old surveyors building or what's left of it." The listing saves the wildlife watch for the return paddle: bighorn sheep, bald eagles and foxes along the shoreline.
Morning Cool or Afternoon Light at Emerald Cave

Both departures, 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM, run the same four-mile route. The operator says the 1:00 PM trip is the popular choice for guests chasing the light around Emerald Cave, where a green glow can appear when sunlight reflects through the canyon onto the water. The 9:00 AM trip is the operator's pick for cooler temperatures and an earlier start.
Heat does not cancel this trip. The operator says summer on the river can pass 110°F, the water stays chilly, and warm months leave time for a swim. Wind and unsafe weather can call a departure off, and the lead guide decides no later than the day before.
Arizona Time, Your Own Car, No Signal
The listing keeps its start times on Arizona time, and Arizona does not change its clocks. From November 1, 2026, when Las Vegas falls back an hour, a 9:00 AM start at Willow Beach reads 8:00 AM on a Las Vegas clock, and that gap lasts until March 14, 2027.
There is no ride from the city. The listing tells guests to rent a car and to skip rideshare. Willow Beach has no cell reception, so a rideshare drop-off leaves no way to get a ride back. Lake Mead charges USD 25 per private vehicle at the Willow Beach entrance, valid for up to seven days, the park does not accept cash, and an America the Beautiful pass covers it. Lake Mead is not one of the 11 parks that add a USD 100 fee for non-US residents.
Ages, Fit and the Forms Before You Launch
The listing accepts travelers from age five, but the operator's own minimum age is eight, and it asks that children under twelve ride in a tandem with an adult. Minors need parental consent.
For fit, the operator publishes a comfort guideline: about 250 pounds for paddlers who carry weight in the hips, and about 280 pounds for those who carry it evenly or up top, with a cockpit about 18 inches wide. The listing does not recommend the trip for travelers with poor cardiovascular health, and everyone signs a liability waiver and a health and fitness declaration once the booking is confirmed.
The listing ticks its wheelchair-accessible boxes, including one for transportation on a trip that provides none. The operator's tour, FAQ and policy pages say nothing about wheelchair access and describe rocky desert ground and getting in and out of the water.
