Fried Clams and Colonial Graves Around Harvard Square

A Cambridge food walk that slots clam po' boys and pizza between Harvard Square history stops, then ends on a Boston cream pie donut.

Secret Food Tours takes this walk across the river from downtown Boston into Harvard Square. The listing promises Cambridge history along the way, with stories about former residents including Julia Child, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. The last stop is Union Square Donuts on John F. Kennedy Street, where the final bite is a Boston cream pie donut.

The listing sells it as 180 minutes. The operator's own page says three to three and a half hours.

A shared group tops out at twelve guests on the listing, the same cap the operator's page gives. Water is the only drink included, and gratuities are not.

Four Named Tastings and a Dish Kept Secret

The listing names the food: a New England popover, a fried clam po' boy, a slice it calls Harvard's favorite pizza, a Boston cream pie donut and a Secret Dish revealed only on the tour. The operator's page puts the popover at a historic luncheonette and the clam po' boy at a local seafood spot, where the guide talks through the dish's roots in nearby Essex, Massachusetts.

The menu is not locked. The operator says stops can change with each venue's availability, and one July 2025 reviewer took a star off for missing the popovers that day.

Reviewers keep coming back to quantity. A March 2025 reviewer advised against booking dinner on tour day, and an August 2025 reviewer needed only a light bite that evening.

Old Graves, a Lampoon Building and Cambridge Common

Between tastings, the listing route gives Harvard Yard about thirty minutes, past the John Harvard statue, then about fifteen minutes each at the Harvard Lampoon Building, Cambridge Common and the Old Burying Ground. The listing describes the burial ground as a 17th-century cemetery holding early colonial jurists and Harvard College presidents. It also stops at a hotel that, by the listing's account, opened in 1985 on a site John F. Kennedy's estate first picked for his presidential library.

Harvard Yard is the stretch the operator does not control. Harvard's rules for outside tour companies allow one Yard tour per company per day, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Harvard notes that the Yard occasionally closes for University activities.

Look for the Orange Umbrella at the Smith Campus Center

The listing and the meeting section of the operator's page both start the walk in front of the Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Campus Center, 1350 Massachusetts Avenue. The guide waits there with an orange umbrella, the operator says. One answer in the operator's FAQ names a different spot, outside the Harvard Red Line station by the visitor information booth at 0 Harvard Square. Two sources agree on the campus center, so head there.

As of October 19, 2026, the booking calendar sells the public tour at 12:00 PM Tuesday through Sunday and 1:00 PM on Mondays. Noon was sold out on every date through November 1. The calendar also lists 11:00 AM, but no 11:00 AM date was open in the next six months.

Diets, Strollers and the Walking

The operator says many of its tours cannot accommodate certain dietary restrictions and asks guests to email before booking. The booking form also has a special-requirements field. A June 2025 reviewer said vegetarians had options and named a spinach and cheese pizza.

The listing says infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller. The operator's FAQ is more cautious, saying many of its tours are not wheelchair or stroller accessible and asking guests to discuss this tour before booking. The same FAQ puts the walking at around 45 minutes on flat ground with no stairs. The listing asks for at least moderate fitness and does not recommend the walk for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.

📍 Starts in front of the Smith Campus Center, 1350 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge. Ends at Union Square Donuts, 15 John F. Kennedy Street, Cambridge. The operator's FAQ points to the Harvard Red Line station for transit.

  • Full refund through the listing when canceled at least 24 hours before departure.
  • Rain does not stop it. The operator says to bring an umbrella and that it keeps more of the walk indoors, while reserving the right to cancel in extreme weather.
  • Gratuities are extra.
