Freedom Plaza
4.7 (144)park
A grand civic plaza on Pennsylvania Avenue paved with a walkable stone blueprint of the capital's original street plan.
Description

Across the pavement, inlaid black granite traces avenues and the Potomac shoreline alongside bronze plaques and compass points marking historic landmarks. Designed by Robert Venturi and George Patton, the plaza uses raised terraces and planters to frame views toward the U.S. Capitol and White House.
Renamed in 1988 to honor Martin Luther King, Jr., the wide stone expanse serves as an open forum for rallies, national marches, and civic festivals. An equestrian statue of Kazimierz Pułaski anchors the northeast corner, while edge trees and stone seating offer quiet spots off the avenue.
