Watch Houston's Bridge Bats on a Warm Winter Evening
Most Mexican free-tailed bats leave Houston for Mexico each winter. Plenty of them stay under the Waugh Drive bridge instead, and on a mild, dry evening above 50 degrees a good number still stream out over Buffalo Bayou, though no winter flight is guaranteed. Pair it with the restored Lost Lake pond, a five minute walk west, so one parking spot at 3422 Allen Parkway covers a free two hour evening.
📍 Pond First, Then the Bridge
🪷 A Pond the City Gave Back
Lost Lake is the pond Buffalo Bayou Park rebuilt after a 1970s dam collapse, still water ringed with grasses and small cascades. Park in the Lost Lake lot at 3422 Allen Parkway, at the park's west end. Walk the loop while light holds; the bat platform sits a five minute walk east, so one spot covers both stops.

🦇 Be in Place Before Dark
Mexican free-tailed bats pack the crevices under the Waugh Drive deck, and the summer colony reaches roughly 300,000. Many of them stay here through the winter instead of flying south. Take the platform on the southeast bank, or the sidewalk along the east rail, thirty minutes before sunset. Below about 50 degrees or in rain the colony stays inside. Stand to the side rather than under the deck, and keep phone lights and camera flash off.

🌡️ Check the Weather Before You Drive
Two hours covers the whole route. Type 3422 Allen Parkway into your map app, park by Lost Lake around four thirty, walk the pond, then follow the bayou trail east and wait out the flight, which usually starts around sunset. November sunsets run from five thirty five on the first to about five twenty at the end of the month. Lit paths stay open until eleven, unlit ground closes at dusk. A bat on the ground means give it room and call animal control.
