Free Legion of Honor Saturdays for Bay Area Residents, Then a Sunset
A Beaux-Arts palace on a bluff, free to nine-county Bay Area residents every Saturday, and the Pacific forty minutes downhill. Permanent galleries are free while special exhibitions charge full price; the second half costs nothing on the open coastal bluffs.
🗺️ Museum to the water in one walk
🖼️ Saturday costs nothing here
Every Saturday the Legion of Honor offers free general admission exclusively to residents of the nine Bay Area counties, Alameda through Sonoma. This free admission covers only the permanent collection galleries, while special exhibitions require separate full-price admission. Book online to reserve your slot and present proof of residency on-site, such as a driver's license or a postmarked envelope showing your Bay Area address. Hours run Tuesday through Sunday 9:30am to 5:15pm, and the museum stays open on Saturdays between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Rodin bronzes in the courtyard frame the Golden Gate vista.

🌅 Twenty minutes to the water
The coast is 1.6 km from the museum entrance along El Camino del Mar down toward the ocean bluffs. Plan to leave the galleries 40 to 50 minutes before sunset to walk the outdoor path in good light. Sunset occurs around 5:05pm on November 7 and shifts earlier to roughly 4:51pm by early December across different Saturdays. The Lands End outdoor bluffs and trails remain open all day, but note that the Lands End Lookout visitor center closes at 5:00pm. Stand at the paved outdoor overlook to watch the ocean.

🌊 Timing the last light
The afternoon order follows the shifting winter light. Permanent galleries first, outdoor coast second, and departing the museum 40 to 50 minutes early ensures you reach the bluff before dusk. Once the sun dips below the Pacific horizon, ocean winds cool the coast rapidly. The walk back uphill brings you to the free museum parking lot and the Muni 18 bus stop right outside. The trail turns dark after twilight, so carry a phone light for the return climb.
