🏛️ Upstairs, 1920s Main Street

Calle Principal fills the second floor, a walk-through rebuild of Main Street from the 1920s, when this same street was the heart of Mexican, Mexican-American and immigrant life in Los Angeles. The storefronts and gathering places come from real and imagined businesses of the era, offering hands-on, multisensory experiences for all ages. Entry is free with no tickets or reservations required; walk in directly (groups book in advance). Last admission is 4:30 PM, and the museum closes Monday and Tuesday, plus Veterans Day (11/11), Thanksgiving (11/26–27), and Christmas Day (12/25).

🌮 Cross Main Street for the market

Olvera Street runs through El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, the 1781 birthplace of the city, and it is a three-minute walk from LA Plaza. Christine Sterling opened the marketplace on Easter Sunday 1930 after campaigning to save the Avila Adobe, the oldest house in Los Angeles. The brick lane holds souvenir stalls, clothing racks and restaurants under awnings. Hours vary by individual business; check official channels before heading out.

🧭 Put the museum first

LA Plaza sets the clock. It opens at noon and takes its last visitor at 4:30 PM, while the market keeps going into the evening. Start upstairs, then walk down afterwards. Give Calle Principal an hour, eat lunch across Main Street, and loop back toward Union Station, about 0.2 miles (a 5-minute walk) across Alameda from the plaza. Both stops cost nothing to enter; only food and shopping do.
