Four Students Per Instructor on Key Largo's Beginner Reef Dives
A full day that gives the whole morning to a pool. By the time you reach the reef, breathing underwater is already old.
Key Largo sits at the top of the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States. The reef lies a few miles offshore in water that holds between 75 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit year round, and the sites used for training dives sit at 25 to 40 feet.
Scuba-Fun gives the entire morning to a classroom and a pool before anyone goes near the ocean. Four students per instructor is the ceiling, the shop runs the program daily from its storefront on Overseas Highway, and the day closes out around 5:00 PM.

Check-in is at the Scuba-Fun dive shop at 99222 Overseas Highway at 8:00 AM, and the briefing starts on time. The pool and the marina each sit a few minutes away by car.
Try Scuba Diving in Key Largo — Small Group, Max 4 StudentsA full day of classroom work, pool training, and guided reef dives with a PADI-certified instructor. All scuba equipment is included, and no instructor takes more than four students.www.viator.comThe Morning Belongs to the Pool

The classroom session covers the parts that have to be understood before they are useful: breathing off a regulator, equalizing your ears on the way down, and the hand signals that replace talking. Then everyone gears up and gets into the pool.
There is a swim test, and it is a real gate — two laps without standing up or holding the sides. A student who cannot clear it does not go out to the reef, and the operator does not refund that case. The rest of the pool time runs unhurried on purpose. Instructors stop the moment a student asks them to, and the program moves ahead when the student is ready rather than when the schedule says so.
Molasses Reef, and How Deep You Actually Go

The boat ride out runs 35 to 45 minutes. Most Try Scuba afternoons land on Molasses Reef inside John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, where the coral sits in 25 to 40 feet of water and visibility reaches about 60 feet on a clear day.
At 25 to 40 feet there is still daylight on the coral, and the surface stays in sight for the whole dive. The operator lists tropical fish, nurse sharks, eagle rays, sea turtles, goliath groupers, and barracuda among what divers meet down there, and states that none of it is dangerous. Up to two guided dives fit into the afternoon, each one with the instructor alongside.
When the Ocean Will Not Cooperate
Sea conditions decide whether the boats go out. On days they stay in, the dive moves to the lagoon at Jules Undersea Lodge, a protected mangrove basin with its own underwater habitat on the bottom.
The operator discounts the lagoon version, and states plainly that a booked Try Scuba neither refunds nor cancels regardless of which location you end up at. Calm water is the trade: the lagoon holds still when the reef will not. Divers who want the reef specifically can reschedule the diving half of the program instead.
Who Gets to Dive, and Who Does Not
The floor is age 10. Every participant fills out the PADI medical questionnaire, and a yes to any question needs a signed doctor's release before the day starts.
The operator's not-recommended list is long and specific. Ear infections and past ear or sinus surgery, colds and sinusitis, active asthma, respiratory and lung conditions, heart and blood-pressure history, diabetes, seizure history, back and limb injuries, pregnancy, spinal injuries, and fear of closed or open spaces all appear on it, as do travelers over 45 with a family history of heart attack or stroke. A moderate level of physical fitness is the baseline, and being comfortable in water too deep to stand in, without a flotation device, is not optional.
📍 Check-in is at the Scuba-Fun dive shop, 99222 Overseas Highway, Key Largo, at 8:00 AM. The pool and the marina each sit a few minutes from the shop, and you supply your own transportation between the three.
Bring a swimsuit and a towel, plus water and a snack for the afternoon. Everything else sits inside the price — academics, all scuba equipment, pool training, the boat, and a PADI-certified instructor for the whole day. Local taxes are covered; gratuities are not.
Booking confirms instantly, the cutoff is 24 hours before the start time, and cancelling at least 24 hours ahead returns a full refund. Diving and altitude do not mix on the same day: plan on at least 18 hours on the ground after the last dive, which rules out a flight that evening.
Skills you master during the day can be credited toward a PADI Open Water Diver course — Confined Water Dive 1, and Open Water Dive 1 as well if you complete those skills out on the reef. The credit applies to the skills, not to the course fee.
