Description

Designed by Brigadier General Sylvanus Thayer and constructed between 1833 and 1861, the pentagonal fortification protected Boston Harbor across multiple conflicts and served as a Union prison during the American Civil War. Set within Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park, the grounds lead across ramparts and bastions with open views toward the skyline and surrounding islands, while local lore still carries the legend of the Lady in Black.
