Tucked beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, this Civil War-era brick fortress offers tiered casemates and sweeping bay views.
Description

Constructed by the U.S. Army between 1853 and 1861 to defend against hostile warships, the brick and granite structure remains a rare West Coast example of a third-system fortification. Inside, the historic spaces display period cannons alongside old equipment, ropes, barrels, and visual exhibits. Vantage points look past the entrance of the bay toward the distant city skyline.
