Description

Once positioned to defend San Francisco Harbor, the former military post borders the 1934 Veterans Administration Hospital, with pre-World War I fortifications still edging the grounds. West Fort Miley centers on Battery Chester's gun emplacements, which once mounted 12-inch rifled guns covering the Golden Gate's approach channels. Toward Point Lobos, two shell-damaged sections of the USS San Francisco flank a granite monument commemorating those who perished at Guadalcanal in November 1942, with direct access to nearby trails.
