Fort Marcy
4.3 (131)attraction
A remarkably intact set of Civil War earthworks and trenches that once guarded the river approach to Washington.
Description

Hastily planned and constructed alongside its counterpart, Fort Ethan Allen, the outpost was built to defend the Chain Bridge approach to Washington during the Civil War. In addition to the ramparts, the grounds still preserve original rifle pits and a parade ground from the period's defenses. Today, the historic footprint doubles as part of a wildlife corridor encircling the capital.
