Fort Bayard Park
4.3 (108)park
The earthen remains of an 1863 Civil War fort anchor this park, which once guarded River Road into wartime Washington.
Description

Set in Northwest Washington near modern-day Tenleytown, the installation was constructed as a small elliptical earthen fort with a 123-yard perimeter housing a central magazine. As a piece of the capital's Northern Defenses, it was linked by rifle pits to Fort Simmons 775 yards to the west and Fort Reno 1,250 yards eastward. The site commemorates Brig. Gen. George D. Bayard of the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862.
