Follow a Blue-Checked Flag Into Greenwich Village's Ghost Stories

Two hours of Greenwich Village ghost stories at night, from a haunted library and Washington Square to the Cherry Lane Theatre.

This walk sets off from Sixth Avenue at 8:00 PM and spends about two hours on foot in Greenwich Village. A guide tells ghost stories at a haunted library, Washington Square Park, buildings owned by New York University and a theatre on Commerce Street. The tour runs all year at the same start time.

Late October is the natural week to book it, with one catch. The operator's own tour page lists Halloween as a night the tour does not run, and on October 15, 2026 the booking calendar showed no seats for Saturday, October 31. Friday, October 30 was still open.

One booking covers 2 to 15 people, and everyone on it has to be 13 or older. The listing will not take a single traveler, and the only thing included is the guide.

A Haunted Library, Washington Square and NYU's Buildings

The longest pause on the route is about fifteen minutes on the haunted buildings New York University owns around Washington Square, and the listing names the Brown Building among the stops. Washington Square Park itself gets ten minutes, billed by the listing as the most haunted park in New York City.

Jefferson Market Library, the haunted library on Sixth Avenue, gets five minutes as the site of a famous murder trial. Together with the shorter stops farther west, the timed pauses add up to about forty minutes, and the rest of the two hours is walking between them. The listing also promises celebrity hauntings along the way.

Cherry Lane, a Church Garden and the Friends Building

The Cherry Lane Theatre on Commerce Street, listed as a haunted theatre, gets about five minutes, and so does a haunted restaurant the listing does not name.

Two points are walk-bys with no stop. The group passes the garden at St. Luke in the Fields, the listing's haunted churchyard, and the apartment building at Bedford and Grove Streets used for shots in the television show Friends, without pausing at either. The guide can also change the route around marches, parades or protests.

Finding the Flag at 7:45 PM

The group meets on the sidewalk outside the Waverly Diner at 385 Sixth Avenue, on the corner of Waverly Place. The guide arrives 15 minutes early and check-in is 7:45 PM. Look for a white flag with a blue checked pattern and the operator's logo.

The walk leaves at 8:00 PM sharp, a latecomer will most likely miss the group, and the listing gives no refund to anyone who misses the tour by arriving late. Running behind, call the operator's office before 8:00 PM; once the tour is under way, the office cannot reach the guide. The operator's directions point to the D, E and F trains at West 4th Street and the R and W at 8th Street-NYU.

Ages, Access, Weather and Tips

The listing advises against bringing children under 12, citing sensitive and adult subject matter, and anyone under 18 needs an adult who is at least 21. Guests who bring alcohol or drugs, or arrive intoxicated, are asked to leave without a refund.

The tour involves a moderate amount of walking. The listing ticks wheelchair and stroller access, but its own tour instructions say accessibility and restrooms along the route are limited and not guaranteed, and the operator asks guests to check before booking. Use a restroom before check-in.

The tour runs in rain, snow or shine. It happens at night, and the listing says to dress for colder weather and bring an umbrella. Weather calls it off only when it is dangerous, and then the listing offers another date or a full refund. Booked through this listing, a full refund holds until 24 hours before the start. Booking on the operator's own site is stricter: its FAQ stops refunds two calendar days out, and the terms buyers agree to at checkout say four full calendar days. Gratuity is not included, and the operator's tour page says a 15 percent gratuity is added for groups of eight or more.

📍 The walk does not loop back to the diner. It ends outside Marie's Crisis at 59 Grove Street, near the corner of Seventh Avenue and Christopher Street, with the rest of the evening still ahead in the Village.
