Foley Square

The plaza's park is named for Thomas Paine, the author of the Revolutionary tract Common Sense. Above ground, the space is framed by a fusion of old and new architecture, with grand columns that evoke the historic styles of Egypt, Greece, and Italy. Beneath the square, the rumble of the subway line running directly underneath shifts the atmosphere, echoing in a way that suggests an abandoned station.
