Description

Built on a man-made island between Miami and Miami Beach, the memorial was commissioned in 1920 by Carl Fisher to honor railroad industrialist Henry Flagler. Sculptors Ettore Pellegatta and H.P. Peterson framed the central monument with colonnades and four allegorical figures representing Industry, Education, Pioneer, and Prosperity. Designated a historic site in 2002 after being deeded to the city decades earlier, the island functions as a passive park with open vantage points over the MacArthur Causeway and surrounding waters.
