Vintage hand-drawn engines and early firefighting gear fill an authentic turn-of-the-century firehouse in Old City.
Description

Philadelphia marks the birthplace of American volunteer firefighting, tracing back to Benjamin Franklin’s 1736 Union Fire Company. The museum charts that lineage through preserved machinery like the Joel Bates engine and horse-drawn apparatus, alongside collections of historical fire marks, parade hats, and uniforms. Displays also focus on the department's evolving ranks, featuring the William C. Richmond Gallery and dedicated exhibits covering the Black history of the PFD and women in the department, paired with fire safety education.
