Exploratorium After Dark: Adults-Only Food Science

Taste buds, fermentation microbes, and an all-natural music menu by DJ Shmunty fill Pier 15 for a food-science night, with Bay Bridge lights on the walk to BART.

🧪 One Night of Food Science

🍽 From the First Bite On

On Thursday nights the Exploratorium opens to adults 18 and older only, and on November 5 the subject is food: everything that happens when, and after, we eat. The night tracks the historical, cultural and scientific forces that shaped our meals and pantries, then narrows to the link between taste buds and olfactory receptors and to the microbes behind fermentation. The rest of the museum stays open too, 650-plus hands-on exhibits across the galleries.

🥂 Microbes, Drinks, and a DJ

The series invites you to grab a drink, try something new and go home different. The music is an all-natural menu, cooked up by DJ Shmunty. The Tactile Dome is a separate ticket, not part of After Dark admission, at $15.95 or $12.95 for members. It needs a reservation for a session between 6:15 and 9:15 pm, and you cross the sculpture in total darkness.

🌉 The Walk to the Bridge Lights

A ticket is $22.95 with fees included, and adults 18 and older show a valid ID at the door. Members and donors walk in free with a membership card. Doors run from 6 PM to 10 PM. You can leave before the 10 PM closing to catch the lights early, walking south along the waterfront promenade for about 15 minutes, 1.1 km, to the Market Street BART entrance at Drumm. The Bay Lights burn from dusk until dawn, and the rebuilt 48,000-LED artwork came back on March 20, 2026.
