Elk Sausage and Green Chili on the Walk Into LoDo

A three-hour walking tasting tour from Denver's Ballpark District into LoDo, with five dishes on the booking list.

Secret Food Tours walks this route through the oldest part of downtown Denver. The group gathers on Larimer Street in the Ballpark District, the neighborhood around Coors Field, then heads into Lower Downtown, or LoDo. The booking lists five tastings: smoky Colorado elk sausage, pork green chili, a Colorado bison burger, a pistachio and ricotta cannoli, and one dish kept secret until the day. The listing sets three hours start to finish, and the operator's own page says three to three and a half. Plates come one stop at a time, with the history told on the walk between them.

Two versions share this listing. The small-group walk caps a group at 12 people, and as of October 2026 the booking calendar offers it at 11:00 AM and at noon on most dates. The private upgrade puts only your own party on the walk, with start times every hour from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The private option is priced per person on a sliding scale, and the per-person price falls as the party grows. Teens 13 to 17 and children 3 to 12 have their own lower small-group fares, and children under 3 join free.

From the Ballpark District Into LoDo

The first stretch belongs to the Ballpark District. The listing walks past Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies since it opened in 1995, and past a building that madam Jennie Rogers put up in 1889, in the listing's words the classiest bordello in the Rocky Mountain West. Mattie Silks later ran it until a federal edict closed it around 1915, and from 1920 until 1998 it served as a Buddhist temple and warehouse. Both are seen from the sidewalk, without going in. The listing gives the Ballpark District and LoDo about an hour each, then four ten-minute stops: the Dairy Block, Union Station, the Oxford Hotel and Rockmount Ranch Wear. The Ice House is among the LoDo buildings the description points out on the way.

Four Ten-Minute Stops in LoDo

The listing puts a date on each LoDo stop. The Dairy Block once held the Windsor Dairy and now fits shops, restaurants, bars and a boutique hotel into one historic block. Union Station began as the Denver Union Depot in 1881 and came back in 2014 as the city's main rail station and a place to eat, shop and stay. The Oxford Hotel opened in 1891, developed by brewer Adolph Zang and designed by architect Frank Edbrooke, and the listing calls it Denver's oldest surviving hotel. Rockmount Ranch Wear, started by "Papa" Jack Weil in 1946, is still family owned. The listing credits it with the first snaps on Western shirts and the first commercially made bolo ties, and says Jack went to work every day until his death at 107.

What Lands on the Plate

The dish list on the booking reads: smoky Colorado elk sausage, pork green chili, a Colorado bison burger, a traditional cannoli with ricotta and pistachios, and the secret dish. The listing's own description tells the walk a little differently, with a pizza slice where the burger would be, and the operator notes that the itinerary and menu can change with each restaurant's availability, the weather and other circumstances. Travelers in September 2024 and March 2026 both describe an elk hot dog at Billy's, the meeting-point shop. Reviewers split on quantity: several left full, and one October 2026 guest found the servings small. Drinks are not on the booking's dish list, and the legal drinking age is 21. The operator asks to hear about dietary requirements before the tour, to plan around them where possible.

Who Can Join, and on What Terms

A booking needs at least one adult, and the small group holds up to 12 people. The operator says it cannot accommodate wheelchairs or any impairment that needs special assistance, even though the listing also marks the tour as suitable for all fitness levels. It warns of a fair amount of walking, asks for comfortable shoes, and cannot take pets. Cancel at least 24 hours before the start for a full refund; inside that window nothing is refunded. The operator can cancel for bad weather or too few travelers. Confirmation is manual, and booking closes two hours before the start. Gratuities are not included.

📍 Meet in front of Billy's Gourmet Hot Dogs, 2445 Larimer St, Denver, CO 80205. Be there at least 15 minutes before the start to check in; the guide carries an orange umbrella.
