Duels, Little Gracie and Johnny Mercer: Bonaventure by Golf Cart

An hour on a guided golf cart through Bonaventure's oak avenues, stopping where the stories behind the graves are told.

Ride a golf cart through Bonaventure Cemetery.

Bonaventure Cemetery sits on the Wilmington River, a drive out from Savannah's historic district, and several riders this year describe the grounds as huge. This tour hands the distance to a golf cart. A guide drives for about an hour and talks the whole way.

Wise Guys Historical Tours runs it. The operator says all of its guides have a history background and teaching experience, and that it sets out to be completely historically accurate. Riders say the guide pulls over for photos and lets you step off the cart at stops.

This listing sells the one-hour cart tour with a guide. One booking takes up to ten travelers, priced by age band, and children four and under ride on an adult's lap.

Revolution, Civil War and What the Stones Were Carved to Say

The operator lists what the hour covers: the American Revolution, the Civil War, funerary symbols, dueling, slavery, and the people who built Savannah.

Its highlight list names Johnny Mercer, Little Gracie, the Lawton family plot, Noble Jones, Conrad Aiken, Henry R. Jackson, Robert Anderson, Richard Arnold, the Bacon family, Papa's Sweetheart and the sculptures of John Walz, plus the river, the moss-hung oaks, the azaleas and the camellias. The operator ends that list with "just to mention a few", so read it as a sample of the route.

The carvings are what several riders came away talking about. One wrote in May 2026: "I had no idea there was such symbolism in the older statues."

Get There Early for a Forward-Facing Seat

The cart in the operator's photos has a rear bench that faces backward. Two riders this spring said those seats catch each stop late, once the cart is rolling past, and one gave the fix: "Get there early to get a good seat."

Guides this summer have carried bug spray and hand fans. Riders still suggest bringing water and repellent of your own: the paths can be dusty, and mosquitoes and gnats come out. Several of them chose the cart over walking for the heat alone.

Turn Left on Mullryne Way and Drive to the River

The tour meets at the visitor parking lot at the far back of the cemetery, beside the Wilmington River. The cemetery office, a red brick house, sits just inside the entrance, and Mullryne Way is the road to the left of the office, just past the Gaston Tomb. The operator's booking notes call it the second left after the entrance and its tour page says the first, so go by the street name. Follow Mullryne to the river, three to four minutes, and look for the golf cart parked by the water.

The operator asks you to arrive 10 minutes before departure. Riders this year have had trouble finding the lot and asked for clearer signs at the entrance, and one said the operator reached out and helped them find the group.

There is no pickup on this listing, so plan your own way out from the historic district. A rideshare there is a separate cost.

Five Departures a Day, With Holiday Gaps

Carts leave at 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 12:00 PM, 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM. When checked on October 11, 2026, this listing's calendar and the operator's own booking system both sold Sundays too, though the operator's tour page still says Monday through Saturday. Both were closed November 25 to 27 and December 20 to 27, and neither had dates loaded past December 31.

Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund. Inside 24 hours, nothing is refunded. The listing says a tour can be called off for bad weather.

The listing allows service animals. It also ticks stroller access, nearby public transport and suitability for all fitness levels, and none of those appears on the operator's own pages. Neither source covers wheelchair access, so ask the operator before booking if climbing onto a cart bench is hard for you.
