A Beginner-Friendly Mat Session for Anyone Curious

A downtown Chicago club opens its mat to beginners on Sunday, September 13. Coaches teach Brazilian jiu jitsu as a skill to learn, not a workout, and comfortable clothes or a loaner gi are all you need to join.

🥋 On the Mats

🤍 What the Class Is

Downtown Jiu Jitsu Club runs an open class in the city center, built around Brazilian jiu jitsu as a skill to learn rather than a workout to grind through. The session welcomes total beginners, with coaches walking new people through the basics before anyone rolls. Coaches lead every drill, and nobody is left to figure it out alone. The room mixes first-timers with regulars in gis, a focused and low-key mat where questions are normal.

👟 Inside a Session

Newcomers turn up a little early, pull on a borrowed or brought gi, and settle onto the mat as the coach opens with a warmup. The class drills a few positions slowly, partners taking turns while instructors correct grips and footwork down the line. People reset between rounds, ask questions, and try the move again at an easy pace. The whole session runs about an hour, closer to a guided lesson than a hard spar.

📍 First-Timer Notes

The club meets in downtown Chicago on Sunday, September 13, with the mat open to newcomers. Comfortable clothes work if you do not own a gi, and arriving a few minutes early leaves time to sign in. A water bottle and bare feet are all you really need. It suits anyone who wants to try jiu jitsu in a low-pressure room with real coaching. Most first-timers leave having drilled a move or two and traded names with a few regulars.
