Description

On the evening of March 4, 1776, continental forces and local volunteers fortified this location with cannon after months of planning ordered by George Washington. That military operation directly led British forces to evacuate Boston two weeks later, on March 17. In 1898, the General Court of Massachusetts commissioned the Georgian revival tower on the remaining hill of the Heights, commemorating the 1776 victory and linking the historic fortification to the ongoing growth of the surrounding community.
