Description

The journey begins through the surrounding deer park before reaching the expansive grounds, which host far more than a single hall. Historic structures such as the monumental Nandaimon gate, Hokke-do, Nigatsu-do, and Kaidan-in are scattered across the complex alongside the Todaiji Museum, showcasing extraordinary Buddhist sculptures. Beyond the main statuary, a popular tradition draws visitors to a wooden column inside: crawling through a pillar opening said to equal the Great Buddha's nostril promises good luck, health, or enlightenment in the next life.
