Uncovered during 1953 road construction and left exposed rather than paved with concrete, the roadside wall stands roughly 30 meters high and 600 meters long. Over 100 major eruptions accumulated layers of scoria and ash across 15,000 to 18,000 years. The characteristic wavy bands were not created by tectonic compression, but formed as volcanic debris settled over rolling terrain. Local affection for the distinctive layering runs deep enough that even the nearby bus stop is styled like a Baumkuchen cake.
