Destin Dolphins at Sunset, With a Rain Check Built In

AJ's runs the same speedboats out of Destin Harbor all day. The sunset departure is the one whose clock keeps moving, and almost everything that goes wrong on this trip goes wrong on land: the parking lot, the crosswalk, the booth, and how early you need to be standing at it.

Catch Destin's dolphins at sunset.

There is one sailing a day on this ticket, and the time follows the light. The published calendar puts boarding at 5:15 PM in late August and 3:00 PM in the middle of November, which catches people who booked something called a sunset cruise and pictured an evening. Read the time on your own date before you book a table for after.

The route is the one the daytime boat runs, with extra time built in for the light. A narrated lap of Destin Harbor, out past Crab Island, then into Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf to look for dolphins.

Two hours, start to finish.

Departures leave from the AJ's Water Adventures booth at 116 Harbor Blvd, down at harbor level beside AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar. Every traveler needs a ticket, including babies under three. One booking covers up to fifteen people; the boat itself holds eighty.

The Dolphins, and What Happens If They Hide

The crew looks in the harbor, in Choctawhatchee Bay, and out in the Gulf. Most of what surfaces is backs and dorsal fins moving through the chop, sometimes a pair together, sometimes one animal alongside the hull. Jumps happen, and jumps are what get photographed. A normal sighting is quieter than that.

The booking page lists sightings as guaranteed. The operator's own cancellation policy spells out what the word buys you: if you do not see dolphins, you are issued a raincheck ticket, and raincheck tickets never expire. The guarantee covers a second trip. It promises nothing about this one.

The narrated harbor tour is part of the ticket either way, so the first stretch has commentary whether or not anything shows.

Kids Take the Wheel, Adults Get Two Drinks

AJ's puts children on the wheel, and says so across all of its cruises. On a boat where the main event is outside your control, that turns out to be the thing kids talk about afterwards.

Seating is first come, first served across eighty seats. A group that wants to sit together should be standing at the booth when check-in opens.

Drinks are included, and beer and wine are capped at two per adult. The rest of the list:

  • Soda and water throughout the cruise
  • Photo ID if you plan to drink
  • No coolers, no outside beverages
  • Snacks of your own are fine

Souvenir photos are sold on board and crew gratuities sit outside the ticket price. Bring cash if you expect to use either.

Expect Spray, and Dress for the Water

This is an open speedboat and the operator is plain about what that means: it will try to keep you dry, and sometimes the water is choppy and that cannot be helped. Wear something you do not mind getting damp, and bring a towel.

Light rain is not a cancellation here. The captain decides, cruise by cruise, and the boat usually runs in rain and moderate weather. Thunder or lightning stops it. If the rain starts after you have left the dock, there are ponchos on board.

Two restrooms on the boat. Spray sunscreen has to go on before you board.

Parking, the Crosswalk, and the Booth

Park in AJ's lot on the north side of Highway 98, across from the restaurant. The operator puts all-day parking at USD 20, and the booking page adds that the booth hands out parking coupons, so ask for one at check-in. A signalled pedestrian crossing takes you over the highway; from there you walk down to harbor level.

The booth sits beside AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar near the water. It is blue, with AJ's Water Adventures across the top.

The operator says be there one hour before departure, and that missing the boat means no refund and no reschedule. The booking page says forty-five minutes. Plan on the hour, and add more in season, when Destin traffic is its own variable. Waivers are signed before check-in: one per adult, with children listed on an adult's form.

The map pin below marks the booth, at 116 Harbor Blvd.

Cancelling is free up to twenty-four hours before departure. Weather calls are made cruise by cruise and can come right up to departure time; if the trip is called off before the boat leaves, you reschedule or take a refund. Once the boat has left the dock, a weather turn gets you a credit.

The boat is not wheelchair accessible, and strollers and wheelchairs cannot come aboard. They can be stored behind the ticket booth during the cruise. Service animals are permitted with their paperwork.

One sailing a day, two hours on the water, and a raincheck in your pocket if the dolphins decide otherwise.
