Description

Designed in 1990 by Suzanne Gentiluomo and Joel Ohringer, the grounds evoke an eighteenth-century merchant’s botanical ambition, inspired by sea captains who hauled specimens home from global voyages. The layout features beds edged with germander hedges where vegetables, flowers, and herbs grow side by side, mixing North American natives, overseas imports, and common roadside weeds. Beyond the beds, an orchard of fruit trees leads to a grape arbor, all enclosed by a fence once needed to keep out wandering livestock.
