Collective Soul Plays Nineties Radio by the Water

Collective Soul came out of Georgia in the early nineties and put a run of singles on rock radio across that decade. The band still tours with founding members and plays the catalogue rather than rebuilding it. Guitars sit high in the mix and the vocals carry the hooks straight. Most of the set predates the phones in the crowd by twenty years, which shows in how the room sings along. Newer material lands between the familiar songs rather than opening the night.

Humphreys builds its stage in a marina courtyard with masts visible over the back fence. You arrive from Shelter Island Drive and take an assigned seat. Servers take orders before the music and clear between sets. Boats moor outside the fence and listen from the water for free, which is part of the scene here. Palms surround the seating on three sides. The show finishes early enough for the causeway to stay clear on the way out.
