Cobb Gate
5.0 (8)attraction
An 1897 Gothic archway into the Main Quad, celebrated for its intricate stonework and a storied student rite of passage.
Description

Named for architect Henry Ives Cobb, the gate has stood as a campus threshold since the university's earliest years. While the passage once opened toward Stagg Field, it today connects the Main Quadrangle to the Joseph Regenstein Library entrance on 57th Street.
Its central ritual unfolds during Orientation Week. After opening convocation at Rockefeller Chapel, incoming first-year students follow the University of Chicago Pipe Band across campus, bid farewell to their families at Hull Gate, and pass through the archway greeted by classmates to start their college careers.
