Description

Designed by architect George Howe and sculptor Gaston Lachaise, the memorial stems from two naval tragedies in September 1918: eleven crewmen from the cutter Seneca died attempting to salvage a torpedoed ship, and ten days later, an enemy submarine sank the cutter Tampa, killing all 131 on board.

The monument's sides are inscribed with the names of both cutters and their crews, as well as every Coast Guard member lost in the conflict. Above the motto Semper Paratus, the design marks a tireless maritime vigil from a triangular plot near the southern edge of the cemetery.
