Charleston's Revolutionary and Civil War Ghosts, With Kids in Tow

A 90-minute evening walk through old Charleston, built on war-era hauntings and kept gentle enough for children.

Of the night walks Ghost City Tours runs in Charleston, this is the one built for families. The operator says it keeps the content appropriate for children while still entertaining adults with Revolutionary War and Civil War history. Its own breakdown of the walk is 60 percent history, 30 percent paranormal and 10 percent entertainment. Expect more history than scares.

Booking happens on the listing below, which sells the 8:00 PM departure. Groups of ten or more are asked to contact the operator's group sales coordinator first.

Two Wars Supply Most of the Stories

The listing promises a mix of history and lore about soldiers who once fought within the city, and it names one stop: the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, for about ten minutes, with admission to the building not included. The museum there says British forces made the bottom floor a military prison during the Revolution, holding American prisoners of war, British soldiers, private citizens and enslaved people. It closes at 5 PM, so the walk stops outside; the dungeon is a daytime visit. The operator's page adds three more: the Powder Magazine, completed in 1713 and called South Carolina's oldest government building by the museum inside it, Waterfront Park and the graveyard of the Circular Congregational Church. It says not every stop is guaranteed on every night. One 2025 reviewer of this walk named the Lavinia Fisher story as the one that sort of scared them.

Graveyards From the Gate

Plan to hear the graveyard stories from the gate. The Circular Congregational Church dates the oldest monuments in its graveyard to 1695. A traveler writing in August 2026 said the group never went inside a graveyard, and the operator replied that access can vary by location and tour, and not all groups are permitted to enter. An earlier reviewer of this walk also described standing outside cemeteries and graveyards for those stories. The operator's own guide to the Circular Congregational Church graveyard says it is open to visitors during daylight hours, and this walk sets off at 8:00 PM. Treat a walk among the headstones as a bonus rather than part of the plan.

Strollers, Wheelchairs and Six-Year-Olds

The listing counts children under 6 as free, ages 6 to 11 at a child rate and 12 and up as adults. The operator recommends its family tours for children who can walk for about an hour and a half and enjoy stories that are spooky but not too scary, and a December 2025 traveler wrote that it was not too much of a walk for their 6-year-old. Both the listing and the operator mark the route wheelchair accessible and stroller friendly, and the operator's Charleston FAQ says its routes stay on city sidewalks and paved areas. The operator puts the distance at about a mile at a leisurely pace, with plenty of chances to sit during the stories. Well-behaved, leashed pets are welcome, according to the operator's tour page; the Viator listing mentions only service animals.
