Catch the High Tide Through the Talbot Islands Salt Marsh
A one-hour, self-guided paddle into the salt marsh between Big and Little Talbot islands, planned around high tide.
You are renting a boat for an hour, and no guide comes along. Pick a single kayak, a tandem kayak or a stand-up paddleboard, check in at PADL's shop on Heckscher Drive, and the marsh is yours at your own pace. Staff brief you on where to paddle before you launch. A family that took the one-hour self-guided tandem rental in May 2026 wrote that staff got everything ready and told them where to go.
The listing copy mentions guides, and that has confused some bookers. A traveler in June 2026 thought they were booking a group tour and found it was a solo kayak rental. PADL sells its guided salt-marsh, sunset and full-moon paddles as separate two-hour tours.

As of October 15, 2026, the booking calendar offered a start every half hour from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, every day through December 31. It priced a single kayak or a board at USD 26.88 per person and the tandem at USD 37.62 per person, so two people pay USD 75.24 for one tandem and USD 53.76 for two singles. Every booking needs an adult, and one booking takes up to 15 people.

PADL's page for this location names its window for paddling: within two hours either side of high tide. Florida's 2024 management plan for the Talbot Islands parks notes that low tides occasionally keep paddlers from getting in and out of Simpson Creek, the creek this launch sits on. Travelers back it up. A family who went in May 2026 wrote that the tide needs to be in to make paddling possible. Another paddler, who had set up a 9:30 AM rental that same month, got a morning call from staff saying the tide would not be right for a decent paddle until 11:00.
Check a tide chart for your day before you pick a start time. NOAA publishes tide predictions for a station on Simpson Creek (8720168). The slots run from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, so matching the window is up to you.
Spoonbills on the Oyster Beds

The listing calls this the salt marsh of the Timucuan Trail, and most of what travelers report is small and close. The May 2026 family on the tandem listed tiny crabs, oysters and several kinds of water birds. Others have written about a roseate spoonbill in October 2025 and a bald eagle in May 2025. The state's park plan lists herons and egrets in these tidal marshes year-round, with wood storks and white ibis as seasonal visitors.
Do not count on dolphins. A group who said they had kayaked here for several years wrote in July 2025 that it was the first time they had seen one nearby. Wind, on the other hand, is easier to plan around. A visitor in late March 2025 had a very windy day and wrote that the winding river sheltered them most of the time.
Which Craft Carries Your Group
The three options differ in what they carry. PADL's own booking system lists a 275-pound capacity for the single kayak, 300 pounds for the board and 484 pounds for the tandem, which seats two. PADL's general FAQ, archived in August 2024, is stricter on boards: a 250-pound rider limit and one person per board. On this booking each tandem seat costs more than a single kayak, so two singles is the cheaper way for a pair to go out.
The listing and PADL's FAQ disagree about children. The listing sells child places for ages 0 to 17 and requires an adult on every booking, and a family wrote in May 2026 that their kids enjoyed the tandem. The same 2024 FAQ says you must be at least 18 to rent or ride. Ask PADL which rule this shop applies before you book a child a seat.
First-timers on boards have done fine here. A traveler new to paddleboarding wrote in September 2025 that the staff make it extremely easy, and a couple on their first stand-up session in May 2026 found the water calm and the temperature right.
Before You Drive Out
The name says Amelia Island, but the launch is south of it. PADL lists the shop at 13030 Heckscher Drive, and Florida State Parks describes it as the parks' kayak and paddleboard provider between Big Talbot and Little Talbot islands, with maps, restrooms, snacks and drinks inside. Older listings may use another name: the City of Jacksonville's parks directory still lists 13030 Heckscher Drive as Kayak Amelia, the parks' longtime concessionaire before PADL. Follow the road signs from Heckscher Drive.
The listing says there is adequate parking on site, and Florida's 2024 park plan counted 12 spaces in the parking area at this launch. Florida State Parks lists the PADL facility as one of Big Talbot's parking areas and says all locations are USD 3 per vehicle, so plan on that fee.
Expect a waiver. PADL asks its own direct bookers to complete it in the PADL app before they arrive. Paddles, a leash for boards and US Coast Guard approved life vests come with the rental, and tips are not included. The listing does not recommend the paddle for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnancy.
The booking page marks the rental as wheelchair and stroller accessible. PADL's accessibility policy is more specific: every participant must be able to get in and out of the boat on their own or with a companion's help, and on a rental at least one person in each boat must be able to paddle it steadily and bring it back. If anyone in your group needs help boarding, bring a companion who can give it.
Cancel at least 24 hours before your start time for a full refund. Inside 24 hours there is no refund, and the booking flags that a session can be called off for bad weather. One paddler lost a phone in the water in May 2025, so keep yours in a dry bag or leave it in the car. Time it to the tide, and the hour belongs to you, the birds and the grass.
