The game is set after dark, when La Jolla Cove belongs to the sea lions and the surf and the village above it goes quiet.

The game opens on the grass of Ellen Browning Scripps Park, above the cove. The app first checks that you can see what most people miss, with a ring of glowing numbers that has one gap, and the first ghost turns up right there: a bride whose flowers blacken the moment she touches them. From the park the route follows the Coast Walk toward the way down to the Sunny Jim Sea Cave. The next two ghosts wait above the water, on the path itself. One is a doctor whose chart hides a blood type. The other is an actor struck by a falling spotlight on opening night, with four digits hidden in his script.
Prospect Street, Wall Street and Girard Avenue
Up on Prospect Street, the village's main drag, you put a senator's evidence folders in order. Around Wall Street and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library you spot a made-up pupil in a teacher's class registers, the forgeries in an antique dealer's shop, and the one book that opens a librarian's locked closet. The last three ghosts wait on Silverado Street and Girard Avenue: a professor's artifacts to sort by civilization, a hotel fire that needs a proper evacuation order, and a vanished priest whose organ will not stop playing at night. Evening Starts and the Cave Below the Path
You can start any day, at any hour, once you reach the starting point, and the game is pitched for the hours after dark. Seeing Sunny Jim Cave from the inside is a separate ticket at The Cave Store on Cave Street, where a tunnel of 145 stairs each way leads down to the water.
