C&O Canal Lock 8
4.6 (119)attraction
A historic lift lock along the Seven Locks stretch, featuring hand-operated gates based on Leonardo da Vinci’s design.
Description

Lock 8 marks the beginning of a dense sequence where locks 8 through 14 sit grouped across just 1.25 miles of the waterway. Across the canal's 184.5-mile route, 74 lift locks were engineered to handle the 605-foot elevation change between Georgetown and Cumberland, functioning like steps that raised or lowered boats about eight feet at each stage. Steering into the chamber was historically the most demanding part of canalling. Today, the peaceful setting draws visitors for walking, cycling, and taking in local heritage along the towpath.
