Description
Between 2016 and 2019, Lock 3 was fully disassembled and rebuilt over a reinforced concrete foundation. In its working days along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, it raised and lowered boats through a precise sequence of door operations. Beside the lock stands a bronze bust by sculptor Wendy Ross, dedicated to Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas for his efforts to preserve the canal as a national park.
